Staff Appreciation Week May 6-10

The week of May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week!  I consider ALL staff members teachers, because each person on campus is here to support your child and teach them to be a better person.  Therefore we will celebrate ALL 90+ staff members at Camarena!  We want to make it a special week with snacks, treats, and prizes.  Please look at the sign up and consider donating an item.  We will also have special request from students to make their classroom teacher feel special. • Did you know that students attend school 180 days, leaving over half the year off for vacations, trips, appointments, etc.?
  • Current attendance rates by grade:
    • TK 89% (Foundational Skills)
    • K 85% (Foundational Skills/Learning to Read)
    • First 83% (Learning to Read)
    • Second 89%
    • Third 94%
    • Fourth 85%
    • Fifth 85%
    • Sixth 91%
  • Research show that attendance is one of the most important factors when determining academic success.  Missing out on foundational reading skills will cause academic delays in the upper grades.
  • If your child isn’t sick, please attend school.

CAASPP State Testing

Every year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. You can use the results to identify where your child is doing well and where they might need more support.

Near the end of each school year, students in grade 3 and higher take summative assessments. The umbrella term we use to talk about the summative assessments our students take is CAASPP which stands for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress.

The CAASPP system has two main parts:

  1. SBAC: Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Math*
    * Students with significant cognitive disabilities, as designated in their active Individualized Education Program (IEP), are eligible to take the CAASPP California Alternate Assessments (CAA) for English Language Arts, Math, and Science.
  2. CAST: California Science Test (grade 5, 8, and once in high school)

To learn more about these state tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at: http://ca.startingsmarter.org/ or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at: http://cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

Month of The Military Child

Established in 1986 by then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, April is the Month of the Military Child. April is not only a month to be aware of what these children are sacrificing, it’s a time to say and show thanks. Our deepest gratitude goes out to every military child, young or old, who didn’t get to see their father’s face when they were born, or who had to spend a birthday or basketball game or graduation without a parent because they were deployed. We want to let you know you are LOVED and APPRECIATED. We salute you in the month of April, and we salute you forever because YOU are our heroes too.

If you are connected to the military and have pictures you would like to share, please email to rachel.murphy@cvesd.org

Did you know we have a published author on campus?

Sienna Ambrose MA, LMFT, our Military Family Life Counselor, has written a fun, copings skills book for young readers! She has combined coping skills with the fun of learning the alphabet to help children regulate big emotions! Children, parents, educators, and counselors will be able to guide children through easy-to-read rhymes while also exploring ways to feel better!

You will find the link below to Dorrance publishing bookstore, if you would like to order it.

YMCA Giving Campaign

Did you know that we have a YMCA before/after school site on our campus?  This means that our Robo Griffins directly benefit from the South Bay YMCA program!  Because of this, we want to support the YMCA giving campaign.  There are two ways to support the YMCA fundraising:

  1. You can make a donation to our school fundraising page in just seconds by clicking this link: Camarena Elementary 2024’s fundraising page for YMCA of San Diego County (classy.org)
  2. Look for loose change around the house and bring it to your child’s classroom teacher!  Each classroom will be accepting loose change.  We want to show our kids that every little bit adds up to a lot!  The class from each grade level that collects the most change will receive extra recess.

Junior Academy Program Information-Spring

The Junior Academy Program is a free program offered to students from CVESD in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. Funded through the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program, Junior Academy offers a wide variety of academic and fun enrichment activities, field trips, and meals (breakfast, lunch, and snacks). The highest priority will be given to students identified as “unduplicated” (foster youth, unsheltered, students living in motel/hotels, temporarily doubled up, students in temporary shelters, English language learners, and socioeconomically disadvantaged students). After the highest priority students are registered, additional students will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.

Where is the Junior Academy Program located?

The Junior Academy Program will be offered at six school sites but any CVESD can attend. Hazel Goes Cook, Chula Vista Hills, Fahari L. Jeffers, Harborside, Lilian J. Rice, and Palomar Elementary.

Camarena is a Polling Site

Camarena Elementary School has been designated as a polling site for the upcoming March 5, 2024, presidential primary elections. To ensure the safety of our staff and students, our district has safety precautions for voters and poll workers visiting our school sites during elections. These precautions include:

  • Access to the polling area will be restricted to authorized personnel and voters, with designated entry and exit points.
  • To prevent overcrowding, we will manage the number of individuals in the polling area at any time.
  • Adequate signage and personnel will help direct traffic flow and parking to minimize congestion.
  • Our emergency response plan is in place, and our staff is trained to handle various emergencies.
  • We will work closely with local law enforcement to address any issues promptly.
  • Every effort will be made to place poll locations away from school offices, classrooms, and areas where students will be present.

Voting will be available at our school from Saturday, March 2, 2024, through Monday, March 4, 2024, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the polling site will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you have additional questions, please contact the front office.

Read Across America

March 2 is Read Across America Day followed by Read Across America Week beginning March 4. Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. The NEA wants to make sure that all children have access to books.

This year, the theme is diversity and inclusion. Discovering books with different perspectives helps kids find out what others believe and how they feel, as well as to see themselves in the books that they’re reading. When we provide opportunities to broaden our perspectives, it opens up the door to creating a better and more inclusive world.

Congratulations to Ms. Muro- Chula Vista Elementary School District Teacher of the Year!

She will represent CVESD for the San Diego County Teacher of the Year.

Any child who turns five between September 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025, is eligible to participate in TK for the 2024-25 school year. In other words, if your child was born between September 2, 2019, and June 2, 2020, your child is eligible for our TK Program. Not all district schools have a TK Program. If your neighborhood school does not offer TK, register at your school of residence. Once registered, your school of residence will send a zone transfer form to be completed. You will receive an email confirmation once the transfer is approved, along with placement information.

What is LCAP?

The LCAP is a three-year plan that includes specific goals and actions to improve student outcomes and measurable indicators to track progress and outlines how the district plans to allocate resources, including state and local funding. It is an essential component of the Local Control Funding Formula, which requires school districts to create an annual plan that lists goals, defines outcomes, details actions, and tracks expenditures.

For more information, please visit our LCAP district page or contact your school site. We look forward to hearing from you!

  • Congratulations to our teacher of the year nominees: Ms. Demchuk, Ms. Esparza, Ms. Greenzweig, Ms. Muro, Ms. Pimienta, and Ms. Tsutsumi!  The recipient will be announced at a later time.

General Reminders/Updates

  • Registration for the 4th quarter LEAD program will begin February 21-28, closing at midnight.  Please be advised, registering for the program does not guarantee your child a spot within the program.  You must register each quarter for clubs, unless it is an “invitation” only club.
  • Camarena Elementary School has a “NO FOOD” BIRTHDAY POLICY. Treat bags can be given to all students in the class to take home at the end of the day. Food/treats cannot be consumed during the school day. Please note that balloons are not allowed on campus. They cause a distraction to students in the classroom and can also trigger the alarm system.
